San-Tu Gong-Er (Motif) 三兔共耳

9/14/2026

The Three Hares Motif

Originated from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, the San-Tu motif depicts three rabbits with shared ears chashing each other. This motif might be a Buddhist riddle symbolizing reincarnation or the entanglements between past, present, and future. More interestingly, variants of the motifs can be found in various cultures acoss the Asian, European, and African continents.
