Being conceived as a hybrid media project, "Flora, Luna-Corona 团花•月華" has two integral components:
  1. Interactive web project: www.floralunacorona.com
  2. Physical site-specific installation (shown below)

Flora, Luna-Corona 团花•月華 (physical iteration), 2023-2024
Site-specific Installation for Gibson House Museum, North York

Based on a natural phenomenon called "lunar corona", this mannequin display is a 3D self-illuminating lightbox.
Historically accurate render of Chinese poet Li, Qingzhao (李清照), depicting the fashion of Song dynasty around 1100 AD.
Historically accurate render of zanhua-fashion from the High Tang era, as dogwood/zhuyu was worn during the Chongyang festival. This window installation was facing an actual dogwood in the nearby garden.
A South Asian mala/haar garland was displayed next to Alaina Shah's essay, "Gulab-the ancient pedigree of the rose in Pakistani culture"
This interactive projection featured the 150+ y.o. Tolman Sweet Apple tree next to the Gibson House. Visitors were invited to communicate to the tree by pinning hand-written paper ribbons to the projection.
"Flora" denotes all the plants of a particular place or period. Using this definition as a starting point, "Flora, Luna-Corona" is a multi-perspective exploration of the proximity between plants, land history, and diverse cultural expressions. Inspired by the gender-fluid Chinese fashion of zanhua or flower-adorning, this exhibit surveys how flora functions as cultural knowledge transcending the boundaries of binary, geography, and time.

Similar to a garden, in a city where we share the same soil, sunlight and moonlight, what kind of untold stories can be awakened through the power of nature?

The Gibson House iteration was developed as an exhibition & interactive talk during Toronto History Museums’ 2023 Artist Mentorship. Many thanks to the staffs and volunteers at the Gibson House, as well as the mentors of the Awakenings mentorship for helping me realizing this vision.
